Smooth and Creamy Homemade Tomato Sauce

Tomato sauce adds an extra zing to any dish and is a delicious way to add flavor to your meal. A homemade sauce adds even more flavor, especially since you can tailor it to your specific tastebuds.

For our first tomato sauce recipe, we made it creamy by blending the sauce in our food processor after simmering the stewed tomatoes with all of the ingredients and seasonings on the stove for 20 to 45 minutes. To cut out a lot of time, we used canned stewed tomatoes instead of starting completely from scratch with fresh Roma tomatoes.

To start, heat the skillet with some olive oil and dice your onion. Add the onion to the heated skillet and sauté until golden brown. Next add your minced garlic and stir until slightly browned. Add your stewed tomatoes, salt, and pepper, and simmer for 20 to 45 minutes or until the excess liquid has cooked out and the tomatoes have had a chance to absorb some of the flavors of the onion and garlic.

Pull the skillet off of the heat and allow to cool briefly (unless using an immersion blender) before adding to your food processor and blending until smooth. Add the sauce back to the skillet and bring back to a simmer. Add in the oregano thyme and stir until mixed. Simmer for approximately five minutes. Serve over top of your favorite spaghetti squash or pasta dish.
